Shown here is another view of the Pigeon Farm, with the hills of Elysian Park in the background. Visible also are the elevated railroad tracks. Grain was often accidentally dropped from the trains that passed by on their way to make deliveries downtown, providing some of the food for the pigeons, which were known to consume up to 60 bushels of grain a day.

The Los Angeles River, at left, ran alongside the Pigeon Farm, providing a source of water for the free-flying birds. However, in the late 1930s, a storm flooded the river and washed the ranch away. It was never rebuilt.
